Goodbye TouchWiz

Follow Us.Now, we can actually boot into Marshmallow thanks to the community! TouchWiz on Marshmallow has changed in various ways, and after a few hours of testing it last night and this early morning, I can bring plenty of information about its changes.

The user interface abandoned the stock color palette of TouchWiz for one predominantly white, with the same green accents of the old tradition. The interface does look pretty bad in my opinion, but nobody expected a revamped TouchWiz, and themes will still be able to sort out the color palette. The notification panel now animates with a subtle Material-like expansion, however, which looks nice and it generally flows better as well.

The expanded quick settings changed slightly from the Note5, from the edit button to the fact that S-Finder is no longer present in the status bar as a persistent search button, but has been turned into a toggle instead.

In general, the UI has been cleaned up with new animations and the settings have been sorted. Some applications also received a paint job.

The Marshmallow build comes with the latest security patch level Novemberand performance feels like a dream. Some benchmark scores have gone up, but the device generally feels more responsive and smoother than it did on Lollipop. The multitasking menu, in particular, feels and looks smoother thanks to a new animation and instant responsiveness. The lockscreen, too, opens up much faster due to a new animation. In terms of aesthetics, it looks the same, but with full customization of the shortcut apps.

The calendar, clock, file manager, and music app saw small revisions in their UIs, but the camera did not. There is the included bloat as well, mostly microsoft apps, but these are easy to disable in a quick run through the launcher.

Speaking of which, the TouchWiz launcher remains mostly identical, except for the fact that swiping to the Briefing panel is no longer a laggy mess, and that the customization options are slightly different. There are also some UX changes that you may or may not like. First, multitasking works mostly the same, but the multiwindow menu no longer allows you to swipe to the recents tab to pick your app.

This is a shame, considering the COJ5 firmware I was running before this had introduced a Doze-like feature that greatly enhanced my battery life. S o, is this daily driver material? Performance is outstanding, and the UI changes should mean little to those using themes, although I was not able to try out Material theme here as it was not listed under this new theme store.

EDIT: There is now a kernel that allows deep slee p, so check it out! Special thanks to danon. Following up the development of this flashable build in real time was a great experience, and a testament to the dedication and inventiveness of XDA.

It is the main reason I buy a Samsung device. Sure in the early days it was a bit heavy, and yes I would like more control over which Samsung apps that I wish to keep on uninstall not disablebut it's now a minor issue with increased internal storage and RAM. Certainly if I was still using my old faithful S3 then bloatware would be a concern. TouchWiz though is great, it's provided an enhanced UI and experience, I'm especially happy that with 7. Does the stuff im reading about, the uninstalling of bloatware and preinstalled apps, work on a s6 edge?

There were some good bits of touchwiz for the s pen when I had a Note. But the rest was terrible blaot that wanted extra useless accounts and far too much personal data. But i still don't see anything wrong with touchwiz and the new Samsung experience ui.

The app drawer is split into the Apps and Widgets section, something that was first seen in the Android 4.

On the Home Screen, the pinch-out gesture brings up the Home Screen edit interface, which typical of most launchers. A total of 7 Home Screens are supported. App drawer options such as folder creation also available for home screensapp uninstallation, app hiding, new drawer page creation etc. Apps can be sorted alphabetically, and viewed as a list or a custom grid.

The Accuweather widget could have used a slightly more appealing interface here but nonetheless, it looks good enough. I have installed it on 4. I edit the main screen but then force close the app. I have to fix it how to not be such a situation? Your email address will not be published. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.

These launchers have even become selling points for some companies. Learning a little about launchers, it turns out, offers both power and freedom. First things first: The Android operating system and the launcher that controls the interface are two separate things.

Different launchers have different looks, sometimes offer different features, and may be more or less streamlined. For some users, it might be the most boring version of Android. Stock Android—which, at the risk of oversimplifying things, is itself basically a launcher—is more easily defined by what it lacks than by its features.

TouchWiz Launcher (Original)

On the other hand, it leaves the work of personalization to the user. Each pane on the Android home screen provides a Google Search bar at the top, allowing for quick searching. Google Now is the default launcher with stock Android devices, specifically anything in the Nexus line running Android 4. More on that below. Bottom Line: Stock Android is the choice of Android purists.

TouchWiz is easily identified because of its bright colors, a bluish glow on its notifications, and its cartoony icons. While stock Android throws its Google search bar widget at the top of the display, TouchWiz puts it smack in the middle of your home screen. But while the bar is a permanent if unobtrusive fixture on stock, TouchWiz lets you remove it if you so desire. The navigation bar at the bottom also shunts the app drawer button to the right-most side of the display, as opposed to the center position it usually occupies on other Android UIs.

TouchWiz also offers users the Multi Window feature, which puts running apps on-screen side by side. In my own experience with TouchWiz, sometimes apps would hang, crash, or simply suffer from unexplainable bugs. Recent reviews of the Galaxy S6 say that Samsung used a lighter hand on its latest version of TouchWizmaking it more usable than previous iterations. But watch out for the bugs. Its colors are a bit more muted with more minimally drawn icons.

Sense starts with a time and weather widget at the top of the home screen, but an otherwise standard navigation bar layout on the bottom. The newest version of Sense brings Themes with it, which gives users a starting point in terms of wallpaper, icons, and color schemes from which to further customize their experience.

Users can also use Sense to more easily customize their lock screens with the information they want to see at a glance, like appointments, weather, and email. Still, Sense has a unique style that stands out, and is far less garish than most other Android UIs. Bottom Line: Sense has undeniable style, and gives your phone a premium software feel. Bottom Line: Some interesting photography options and multitasking capabilities make UX an interesting up-and-comer in the world of Android skins.

Overall, each different Android launcher has its own advantages and drawbacks. But for my money, even without single-screen multitasking, the best Android is pure Android. Meanwhile, if you hate the skin you find on your new phone, there are no shortage of launchers to choose from.

Well, kind of. I enjoyed switching to the Go Launcher EXbut even more launchers have been released since then.
